What you can learn at this 10th annual ‘future of news’ unconference

For the 10th year, we at are bringing together a couple hundred journalists, editors and media makers to consider how technology can help communities be better informed.

The future is usually a mix of the past and the present with bits of technology interspersed.

It’s something you’ll see inside the tribe of media makers who choose to activate under the banner of journalism. Many of the old norms of a once-powerful publishing industry remain, but the trends of today combine with new tools to predict where we’re headed. For the last decade in Philadelphia, we at have gathered a couple hundred journalists, editors, technologists and students of the craft for an annual unconference sharing these trends.

This year the 10th annual Klein News Innovation Camp (once called Barcamp News Innovation), which we host in partnership with the Temple University Klein College of Media and Communication, takes place Saturday, Oct. 13.

Like other unconferences, most of the day’s sessions are programmed the day-of by attendees, but we always supplement that programming with a handful of pre-planned sessions to give you a taste of what to expect.


In further honor of the 10th annual, we’re replacing our lunchtime keynote by having 10 longtime attendees share big predictions for the news industry. We’ll hear from people like TED Managing Editor Emily McManus, USA Today reporter Jessica Estepa and Wall Street Journal photo editor Dave Cole, among others.

  • “Lessons from Broke in Philly: The benefits and challenges of mass city-wide collaboration among local media outlets” with Kerith Gabriel of Philly Weekly, Danya Henninger of Billy Penn, Martin Pratt of WURD digital, Emma Restrepo of the Para Ti Mujer radio program and Ariella Cohen of PlanPhilly
