‘Tis the season to be jolly … and attend a handful of tech and entrepreneurship events.

That’s how the song goes, right? Is it just us, or does it seem as the year winds down our calendars get the busiest? This month, we take it a little easy on you, with a handful of events that can be attended at home or in person — whatever strikes your fancy (and comfort level) in these last few days of 2021.

For December, we’re bringing you a mix of legal advice for new business owners, pitch events for startups and investors, a showcase where young companies will share how they’ve grown and learned through the pandemic, and even a Slack-based discussion and awards ceremony before we end the month a little early for holiday celebrations.

Keeping yourself legal

Philadelphia SCORE is hosting this virtual workshop to teach business owners the legal structure, intellectual property and contract info they’d need to run a successful new business. Attorney Zane Johnson will lead the session and raise the legal issues new business owners should be aware of and how to address them.

Angel Venture Fair

The 24th annual live Angel Venture Fair takes place at the Union League on Dec. 7. Companies may apply to become members of the private investors forum, and may apply to pitch at the conference. Applicants to the AVF are reviewed by 80 judges — a group made up of angels and conduits to angels — and 34 entrepreneurs will be selected to showcase their new venture on the day of the fair.

Citizen Diplomacy International’s Philadelphia chapter is hosting this conversation on inclusive leadership as a tool for social change. This year’s cohort of University City Science Center’s Launch Lane accelerator will highlight the work of eight startup companies in the digital health space. This year’s companies represent founders from the US and Canada. First, the startup founders will present on their companies, and at 7 p.m., folks interested in meeting the founders can do so at an in-person session.

Energy Innovation Lab Pitch Day

Earlier this year, Temple University and Philadelphia Gas Works put out a call for startups innovating in the energy space for its Energy Innovation Lab. Later this month, finalists for the incubator will present their proposals to a series of judges and community members for one or two chances to be provided with business mentorship, guidance and support from PGW and Temple’s Small Business Development Center for a two-year period.
