There are lots of attractive aspects to working freelance — like the ability to set your own hours and work remotely and more. But it also introduces questions you might not have to consider daily in a traditional nine-to-five — how to get that next job and what to charge for your work, for example.
If you’ve ever considered going freelance in #dctech, you might have a few questions about how it’s done. Thankfully, Women Who Code DC has you covered.
In a new Medium post, the D.C. branch of the national nonprofit interviews four women currently doing some variety of freelancing. Together Eve Freeman, Erin Upton-Coulsich, Evan Taylor and Becca Goodman take on questions about taxes, healthcare, how to get started and how to advertise your work.
A few takeaways — make sure your rates reflect the fact that, as a solo entrepreneur, you’ll be paying for things (like healthcare) that an employer would usually take care of, remember to file taxes quarterly and don’t be shy about advertising your availability.

The end of the post promises a follow up piece on “managing client relations, additional resources for freelancers, and other aspects of freelancing.” So keep your eyes peeled for that and remember, when it comes to the world of taxes and tax deductions, there is always this D.C. tech startup that might be able to help you out.
