Concrete impregnated fabric used by Dumbo designers to make pedestals for folk art fashion look like pillows, evoke the draping of cloth.

Its design that’s understated enough that you could miss it, but once someone points it out, it’s remarkable.

The new exhibit at the American Folk Art Museum, “Folk Couture: Fashion and Folk Art” on display through April 23rd, features the work of 13 designers making apparel inspired by the museums permanent collection. Dumbo’s Situ Studio was brought in to design the exhibitions pedestals and display system.

The exhibition was covered by Fast Company Design, which drew attention to Situ’s intriguing choices for making its displays.  The displays look like they are pillows, achieved using concrete-impregnated fabric.

Situ Studio‘s website has a great photo gallery of the fabrication of the display system. Its website describes itself as a design studio with fabrication built in, because its partners want to really be able to explore a lot of spatial issues. We especially like the 21st photo, as it is a real behind the scenes look at how the platforms got made.
