Eastern Foundry, the Crystal City-based coworking space and incubator that focuses on supporting companies seeking to innovate for the government, announced the nine finalists of the 2016 Foundry Cup on Tuesday. The second annual Foundry Cup, you may recall, is all about portable power.
As Eastern Foundry announced when the call for Cup participants went out in November, portable power solutions that can decrease government spending and reduce carbon emissions are a critical need. Thus the incubator’s decision to highlight these nine promising companies.
The selected companies will now convene in Arlington from March 23-25 for three days of trainings and networking, during which the finalists will have the chance to meet “private and public sector leaders in government energy.” On March 25 the companies will hold a public Demo Day (RSVP here) with a $10,000 cash prize on the line for the winner.
Here are the companies that were selected:

  • Besstech — An Albany, N.Y.-based sustainable battery company that is “rethinking battery manufacturing.”
  • Energy Intelligence — A company that wants to power cities by harnessing energy that is (traditionally) lost when vehicles brake.
  • Goal Zero — A company that creates a renewable portable solar panel.
  • New Wave Combustion — A company that constructs modular, multi-purpose gas turbine engines.
  • Reshma AtriAccording to DC Inno, Atri is an entrepreneur looking to build portable biogas plants for remote locations.
  • SiNode Systems — A Chicago-based company developing better lithium-ion batteries for mobile devices.
  • SilLion, Inc. — Another company in pursuit of “long-lasting, simple and scalable” lithium-ion batteries.
  • SIVA — A company that is “harnessing kinetic energy to power mobile devices,” aka encouraging us all to recharge our mobile devices while we bike to work.
  • Tectonica — A company developing portable power for the military.
