The billion-dollar creator economy hits PGH
While cities like New York and Los Angeles are still considered the stereotypical influencer hotspots, content creators are carving out a space in smaller markets like Pittsburgh.
With influencer marketing booming into a $24 billion industry, local creators are turning their passions into careers. How? By staying authentic, engaging their audiences and tapping into the unique advantages a mid-sized city can offer.
“Creating content is my form of art,” Pittsburgh-based influencer Alaina Wodarek told Technical.ly. “It’s the balance of creativity and business strategy that makes being an influencer such a unique and fulfilling entrepreneurial journey.”

Fintech startup raises $6M, HQ moves to PGH
Healthcare fintech startup StretchDollar announced a $6 million seed funding round on Tuesday, led by one of the nation’s largest individual health insurance carriers.
The company plans to use the funds to improve its platform which offers small businesses the opportunity to contribute pre-tax funding directly to employee-owned health plan premiums. It also might further its Pittsburgh presence after CEO Marshall Darr moved to the city earlier this year.
“I’d love to have more colleagues nearby,” Darr told Technical.ly, referencing a possible Pittsburgh office in the future.
