When Markevis Gideon, founder of NERDiT Now in Stanton, first started his device repair startup, he would acquire old hard drives and refurbish them to give them to families who couldn’t afford a home computer. It was a small way for him to give back after receiving a computer at the age of 12.
Today, the NERDiT Foundation is a major offshoot of the company.
“Over the past three years we have already donated over 300 computers, including over 20 being sent as far as Ghana and Kenya [in] Africa,” Gideon told Technical.ly. A board member for the foundation, Jake Voorhees, traveled to Kenya with Water Is Life Kenya (WILK), a nonprofit founded by Delawarean Joyce Tannian and Kenyan Joseph Larasha.
“It was a life-changing opportunity to travel to Kenya,” said Voorhees. In addition to documenting one of the 18 clean water projects WILK has implemented since 2007, he also donated five NERDiT Now Foundation laptops to the WILK team.
On June 8, the foundation will unveil its first full computer lab donation at the St. Patrick’s Center. The event will include Goodwill’s CareerConnection job program and donations of career clothes for job seekers.
NERDiT Now is located in the First State Plaza in Stanton.
The June 8 event will take place at St. Patrick’s Center, 107 E. 14th St. in Wilmington, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
