At Operation Eve, a STEM program for middle and high school age girls from Science Center-based digital art nonprofit Breadboard, participants created mustache-shaped rings, hand-printed scarves and flower-printed rubber stamps.
From designing the prototypes on Adobe Illustrator to using maker space NextFab’s Studio laser cutters to create the finished project, the girls were involved in every part of the process. They even created a blog to show off their work.
Operation Eve, named for Breadboard program director Dan Schimmel‘s daughter Eve, completed its inaugural six-month program this June. Like youth nonprofit TechGirlz, the program aims to get girls interested in STEM at a young age. Operation Eve also has a focus on the arts.
Funded by a Best Buy Community Grant and a PA Council on the Arts Long Term Residency Award, the inaugural session served 20 girls from Grover Washington Middle School.-30-
