Lyft wants to use transportation tech to meaningfully engage in D.C.’s food ecosystem by bridging the grocery gap for Ward 7 and 8 families with a new initiative coming to the District next week.

On Dec. 11, Lyft will launch its Lyft Grocery Access Program in partnership with Martha’s Table, a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit that provides healthy food, affordable clothing and quality education to D.C. residents. Due to the fact that there are only three grocery stores in Wards 7 and 8, of the 49 throughout the entire District, families with children enrolled at seven participating elementary schools in the two wards will have access to $2. 50 Lyft Shared rides when traveling to four select grocery stores and markets partnering with the program.

The program will be piloted between January and June 2019, where 500 families will receive a max of 50 rides in that six-month period to travel to select grocery stores and Lyft will monitor progress and experience.

The four locations include:

  • Giant at 1535 Alabama Ave SE)
  • Safeway at 2845 Alabama Ave SE and 322 40th St NE
  • Martha’s Table at 2375 Elvans Road SE

Lyft is aiming to reduce the the time, financial burden and transportation barriers for families when it comes to grocery shopping. Lyft and Martha’s Table will launch the program at a community breakfast event on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Martha’s Table, where more details about the program will be unveiled.
