Girl Develop It is launching in South Jersey

Pamela Bey noticed that more and more South Jersey-based women were attending Girl Develop It Philly classes.

South Jersey is getting its own chapter of Girl Develop It.

It’s the third in the Philadelphia region, joining chapters in Philly and Bucks County. The national nonprofit has nearly 40 chapters around the country that offer coding classes for women.

The launch party is on Nov. 20 in Camden.

Pamela Bey, a Girl Develop It teacher’s assistant who runs a web dev and tech curriculum consulting firm called Be Brilliant Media, started the chapter because she noticed more and more women were coming to Girl Develop It Philly classes from New Jersey and some wouldn’t continue taking classes because they didn’t want to make the trek or they were afraid to take classes at night in the city.

Bey, who lives in Camden, also wanted to “replicate the vibrant tech and startup community that is in Philly,” she wrote in an email. It’s something that’s missing in South Jersey, she said. Girl Develop It, among other organizations, is largely responsible for the thriving women in tech scene in Philadelphia.

The chapter will serve Burlington, Gloucester and Camden counties.
