Eagles RB Wendell Smallwood delivers free football camp for Wilmington kids

Smallwood made good on a promise made earlier this year, and DeTV was there to grab some video. Plus: The new head coach of the Sixers' farm team talks about how the Fieldhouse will be more than just a stadium.

Back in March,  Philadelphia Eagles running back and Wilmington native Wendell Smallwood came out to a party hosted by Mayor Mike Purzycki at Kingswood Community Center, where it was announced that there would a be free football camp for Wilmington youth this summer.

Smallwood returned to train a group of enthusiastic kids at Salesianum School, and the DeTV crew was there to catch some footage.

“I just wanted to come out and just have fun with the kids,” Smallwood says in the short video. “I’d never been around something like this — I never had anyone come to Delaware and just give a camp. If it was, it was paid for. I just wanted to bring all the kids out, have fun, get them competing, get them around NFL guys. It’s real, man. We struggled just like them.”

Check out the video:

The new head coach of the Delaware Blue CoatsConnor Johnson, recently attended Sixers Camp at Wilmington Friends School.

“I hope the kids are fired up about the Fieldhouse,” Johnson says in the video. “They can come, they can watch the Blue Coats, I think it’s going to be great. But the Fieldhouse is so much more than just an arena for the Blue Coats. We’ll have lots of sports, soccer fields outside, basketball courts — it can be a central location that kids can come and get into lots of extracurricular activities.”
