Delaware High School Pathways expand – but coding is still lacking

Delaware school districts will receive almost a half million dollars to expand Pathways. Why no coding programs?

On Wednesday, Governor John Carney announced more than $438,000 in federal grants to expand high school career pathway programs in the state.

Pathways, if you’re not familiar, are like majors for high school students. Depending on the school, a student can study their basic academics centered around a specific focus area, including engineering, TV and radio, culinary, agriculture, robotics, business, automotive or child care (to name a few). A lot of people don’t realize this, but many of Delaware’s public schools have facilities like commercial restaurants, professional TV studios and farms.

The goal? To prepare young people good jobs, not just college applications.

Only a handful of schools, including Newark High and Conrad, have computer science pathways. Curiously, considering Delaware’s growing shortage of software developers, while the new programs that will be added offer skills of value, especially in the ag-dominated south, none of the new programs have a coding focus (though some, like Business Information Management and Digital Communications are in the neighborhood).

New and expanded Pathways include Academy of Business Information Management, Agricultural Power and Engineering, Agricultural Structures and Engineering, Animal Science & Management, Architectural Engineering Technology, Automotive Technology, Digital Communications Technology, Early Childhood Teacher Academy, Natural Resource Management, Plant Science, Public & Community Health.
