Saturday, March 10 is International Harriet Tubman Day, and sponsors of the day’s events in Wilmington have come together to make one full-day event at locations across the city.
The day starts at 10 a.m. with a proclamation from Mayor Mike Purzycki, followed by a talk by Tubman educator Patricia Lewis and an activity for kids at Wilmington Friends Meeting House.
At 11:30 a.m., folk artist and advocate Eunice Lafate (whose Lafate Gallery is located on Lower Market) offers a one-hour “Folk Art and Freedom” workshop at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park.
There’s a gap between events at lunchtime — a good time to stop at Drop Squad Kitchen, the all plant-based soul food and smoothies joint at 928 Justison (near the Emerging Enterprise Center on the Riverfront).
At 1:30, the Delaware History Museum on Market Street hosts “The Underground Railroad in Delaware,” where participants walk in the footsteps of freedom-seekers. A City Council Resolution will be read by Councilmember Michelle Harlee.
The day ends from 3:00–5:00 with a performance of Women of Consequence at The Baby Grand. Combining dance, poetry, music and drama, the show explores African-American women who have been minimized or erased from history, including Harriet Tubman, Harriet Jacobs, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Charlotte Forten and Frances Harper.
Women of Consequence is $15 — click here to purchase tickets. All other events are free.
These are separate events — you don’t have to attend all four. There will be a free shuttle making one loop from the 6th & Shipley Colonial Parking Lot, and events are within reasonable walking distance from each other.
