Looking to North Dakota’s recent authorization of non-lethal weapons on drones, Wilmington attorney Thomas Neuberger is calling for discussion in Delaware — among Delawareans and the General Assembly — about drone policy in the First State.
He made his case Tuesday at the New Castle County Civic League, according to WDEL 101.7 FM. Neubeger said he’d like to see citizens urge legislators to prohibit police from using weaponized drones, ban the use of drones to record public or private gatherings, and to wait to use a drone in a law enforcement situation until getting a warrant. And those are all issues he’d like to see debated.
Fwiw, Neuberger said the New Castle County Police Department has said it won’t use drones for surveillance without a proper warrant, but other authorities haven’t made such indications.
This isn’t the first time Delawareans have voiced concerns about drones — in October, State Rep. Steve Smyk (R-Milton-Lewes) called for tighter restrictions on drone-based data collection.
