The nonprofit startup Heroic Gardens, with a mission to provide free gardening services to U.S. veterans and active duty military members in the tri-state area, is the Jenkintown, Pennsylvania-based brainchild of Collie Turner, head of inspiration for the Tapp Network in Wilmington.

“I’m so excited about how well the project had been going,” said Turner, who’s been developing the idea over the last year.

After a successful inaugural project over the spring in Philadelphia, Heroic Gardens announced its summer project: a completely updated yard for Yvonne (the organization refers to her publicly by first name only), a U.S. Army PFC veteran whose significant breathing issues and tight finances have contributed to her once-beautifully-kept yard in New Castle becoming overgrown and unsuitable for enjoying the outdoors.

“Our goal is to clean up her yard, help her identify ‘no fuss’ perennials and provide her with a seating area that she can enjoy anytime she pleases,” said Turner.

The Yvonne project, which will take place on Saturdays through the summer and fall (and can always use volunteers), kicked off on June 29. Check out the group’s Instagram pics below:
