This week, the EdTech Meetup looks at how teachers can use gaming to make learning fun and effective. On Tuesday night, talk to job recruiters and other professionals in the area at the Beers and Careers event at Camden Yards before the Baltimore Orioles game. Another Baltimore TechBreakfast takes place Wednesday. And on Thursday, gb.tc begins its foray into figuring out what a coalition of universities, government agencies and policy makers can do to keep local college graduates in Baltimore city in an effort to expand the talent base from which tech companies can draw.
EdTech Meetup: How can teachers use “Mincraft,” “Portal II” and “World of Warcraft” in the classroom as something other than a pixel-based distraction for education-wary (and weary) students? The EdTech group will convene in Federal Hill to listen to Seann Dikkers, assistant professor of educational technologies at the Ohio University, and Digital Harbor Foundation EdTech fellows espouse the values of game-based learning. Monday, Apr. 22, 6 p.m. Digital Harbor Tech Center, 1045 Light St., Federal Hill, Baltimore city. RSVP. FREE.
Beers and Careers Networking at Camden Yards: For $39, you’ll be able to schmooze with job recruiters interested in hiring people in the Baltimore area while enjoying an unlimited beer buffet for an hour and a half. Seriously, nothing can go wrong. And after the bartender cuts you off, you’ll still have a hot dog or BBQ sandwich and an Orioles game to look forward to. Tuesday, Apr. 23, 5:30 p.m. Oriole Park at Camden Yards, 333 W. Camden St., Stadium Area, Baltimore city. RSVP. $39.
Baltimore TechBreakfast: At this point, really, Baltimore’s monthly startup showcase should already be programmed into your routine. Wednesday, Apr. 24, 8 a.m. DLA Piper, 6225 Smith Ave., Mt. Washington, Baltimore city. RSVP. FREE.
The Talent Show: By bringing together big players in local colleges, think tanks and fast-growing tech companies, gb.tc hopes to “unite those seeking talent with the people, institutions and government agencies cultivating and attracting that future talent base.” It’s Workforce Development 101: keeping graduates from area universities in Baltimore city. Thursday, Apr. 25, 5 p.m. University of Baltimore Student Center, 21 W. Mount Royal Ave., Mount Vernon, Baltimore city. RSVP. $10.
