Should tech scenes do more to retain college talent? [ Podcast]

Ahead of next week's Start. Stay. Grow. Summit in Philadelphia, this month's Podcast explores efforts to hang on to young entrepreneurs after they graduate.

How can institutions of higher education become better anchors of local technology communities?

That’s the question. And there are no easy answers.

In this month’s Podcast we talk about the challenges of hanging on to university students after they graduate.

Take this random sampling of Wharton students, for instance:

We then head down to Delaware, for an interview with Cady Zuvich.

The Delaware native is a senior at the University of Delaware and the executive editor of The Review, UD’s student-run newspaper. She talks with cofounder Christopher Wink about the state of entrepreneurship at UD and how her peers feel about staying in the First State.

Then it’s further south for a visit to Baltimore. We check in with Megan Miller, the director of the career development office at the Maryland Institute College of Art, or MICA. From Under Armour to Amtrak, jobs after art school aren’t what they used to be.

Lastly, we check in with Events Manager Kate Leshko for information on the upcoming Start. Stay. Grow. Summit in Philadelphia — which is co-organizing. The Sept. 9 event seeks to connect college entrepreneurs with existing technology groups in the Philadelphia region.

The hope, Leshko says, is to answer that vexing question up top: If universities represent momentum — huge flows of human potential — how can their host cities capture a bigger share? It starts with convening and connecting.
