Put that new data portal to work: Open Data Challenge kickoff event Nov. 10

Start gearing up for Open Data Delaware's National Day of Civic Hacking event with this handy workshop.

The Open Data Challenge is back and will be kicking off on Nov. 10 at 1313 Innovation at 6 p.m. A session will be held for civic hackers, both new and seasoned, about the state’s new open data portal. Pizza and refreshments will be served. The event will be precursor to Open Data Delaware’s version of the National Day of Civic Hacking.
Answers to questions such as these will be covered:

  • “What datasets are in the portal?”
  • “What should be there that isn’t?”
  • “What problems could we solve using the data that is available right now?”

Open Data Delaware cofounder Ryan Harrington hopes that this year’s Open Data Challenge will tackle the momentum issue: When participants come out to the event, they’re really excited about their projects. But once the event ends, momentum is lost.
Harrington says organizers are working on possible solutions to that. “But two key things we know,” he said. “The [National Day of Civic Hacking] event will be longer than one day and prize money to winning teams will be distributed as the product is developed.”
The team may want to look north to the drawn-out success of Code for Philly’s monthlong City as a Service Hackathon for inspiration.
