Earlier this month we told you about outgoing Wilmington University president Dr. Jack Varsalona’s $5.5 million one-time payout, which got us thinking, what exactly do higher ups in higher education make? So we took a look at the most recently updated public 990 tax return records (mostly labeled from 2014) and this is what we found.
University of Delaware’s former president Patrick Harker’s outgoing salary was $870,236 with $80,680 in bonuses — the second highest salary we found in our search. Harker is now president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Currently, Dr. Dennis Assanis serves as president at the University of Delaware and there is no available public record of his salary yet.
Delaware State University’s current president Harry Williams was paid $360,656 last year and $111,225 in additional income.
Delaware Technical & Community College president Mark Brainard takes home $163,671. Brainard assumed his position as president of the college in 2014 after being voted in by the board of directors. William Hoy was initially selected for the position but the board of directors could not reach a unanimous vote, since Hoy would’ve been considered a newcomer in the state.
The biggest surprise was Goldey-Beacom’s former president Mohammad Ilyas who made $1,458,447 with additional income of $31,687. 2014. Current president Gary Wirt was on payroll prior to starting his role. He was paid $601,806 with bonuses of $31,975.
Widener’s president James Harris was paid $466,306 with bonuses of $354,933. Delaware College of Art and Design’s president Stuart Baron made $167,475 with additional income of $13,194 adding up to an income of  $180,699.
So what does one major in to become a university president? They all have at least two things in common: they have Ph.D.s and have been researchers or administrators at universities for over 20 years.

Companies: Wilmington University / Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD) / Widener University
