Lots of news lately about technology in the social-good space here in Brooklyn.
Here’s a links roundup:
- Citi Bike abruptly shut down in order to improve software [New York Times]: It was a move by its new owners, Motivate, to make the service better for riders. Unfortunately, it didn’t warn any of its customers that it was doing it. So, better customer service by way of not-so-great customer service.
- ShotSpotter credited with first arrests [News 12]: The NYPD cameras know how to recognize the sound of gunshots and can rapidly take photos. Apparently, they have already spotted some gunplay at work.
- Brooklyn fire highlights need for heatless heating system [Brooklyn Reader]: A New Jersey inventor is working on a way to warm foods during the Sabbath without actual heat.
- Two teams from P.S. 8 compete in Lego League at NYU Engineering [Brooklyn Daily Eagle]: The Brooklyn Heights elementary school will be sending one team on to the contest in Manhattan.
- Director of the Environmental Defense Fund’s New York Clean Energy program to speak at Breaking Energy event [Breaking Energy]: The Urban Future Lab is holding an “Energy Startup Forum and Mixer” on April 8.
- Basquiat notebook exhibition at Brooklyn Museum [Brooklyn Street Art]: The show illustrates how the artist used technology (photocopying) to make some of his work and organize his thoughts.
- Sculptures meant to be touched coming to Brooklyn Bridge Park for the summer [Brooklyn Daily Eagle]: One of them uses jets of water to make rooms appear and disappear. That’s one of the artist’s best known works. The other two pieces by Jeppe Hein are inspired by the actual space of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
