Wednesday night is the final pitch and awards ceremony for BigApps NYC, the pitch competition that looks for civic-minded startups that can solve or at least alleviate some of the city’s most pressing problems through the use of technology.

The city-funded competition has been underway for five months, and the five winners out of 20 semifinalists will be announced tonight. Each winner receives $25,000 to work on their idea, as well as mentoring and counseling from city agencies, policymakers and technologists.
“Our teams have been working hard over the past five months to solve New York City’s biggest challenges in affordable housing, zero waste, connected cities, and civic engagement,” according to the event. “It’s time to crown NYC’s leading civic tech innovators and award $125,000 in prizes and invaluable post-competition support.”
Judges on the panel come from Google, Microsoft, AOL, Cornell University and more.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight and will be held at BAM Cafe, 30 Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn.
