An Alexa Skill will help find fishing hotspots in Maryland

The state's Department of Natural Resources made the Maryland Fishing Report available through voice.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is giving voice to its look at fishing hotspots.
Working with state technology developer NIC Maryland, DNR recently made the Maryland Fishing Report available as an Alexa skill on Amazon Echo.


The report is in the top three of most-visited websites for the state, providing updated every Wednesday info about fishing hotspots, conditions and of course the catch of the day. It’s already a feature of the department’s mobile app, and leaders sought to stay on top of new ways to get the info out.
Using the command “Alexa, open Maryland Fishing Report,” anglers can now get access to the report. It breaks down the report by region of the Chesapeake, freshwater or ocean fishing.
“The new Alexa Skill is testament to our ability to keep pace with both technological change and customer preferences,” Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said in a statement.
It’s the latest example use we’ve seen of Alexa Skills by organizations looking to reach users.
The skill was developed at no-cost by NIC Maryland, which is the state’s public-private partnership to develop and run state websites and digital services with NIC Inc.
