This Week in Jobs DMV: We’re Hear For You Edition

Local buzz, jobs and more.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Things That Go Thump Thump Thump In the Night

If your home hasn’t shaken from a helicopter flyover, have you even really lived in D.C.?

Local lawmakers say they’ve finally heard — over the din, we assume — the soaring number of complaints about helicopters roaring over the DMV: They’re now reportedly pushing for a centralized system to track residents’ complaints about the noise.

Close to two-dozen entities, from the military to MedStar hospital to the U.S. Park Police, fly helicopters over and around D.C., which is “one of the busiest and most restrictive” airspaces in the U.S., according to a military report in 2018.

If you were hoping to impress your new bosses by flying in for your first day, you may want to reconsider.

The News

If you’re out of work and living in Maryland, IT industry trade association CompTIA has partnered with EARN Maryland, a workforce training initiative of the state’s labor department, to offer 12 weeks of free tech training. Gain crucial skills in three of the most on-demand fields in the sector: remote tech support, cloud computing and cybersecurity. Applications are due by Aug. 14.

Baltimore’s finally getting the recognition it deserves: Charm City jumped to No. 11 on real estate giant CBRE’s annual Tech Talent Scorecard, which ranks the top regions for attracting and growing local tech talent in North America. Baltimore placed No. 14 in last year’s ranking. Topping the scorecard this year: The San Francisco Bay Area (no surprise), followed by Washington, D.C. (hey hey), Seattle, Toronto and New York City.

An Alexandria grant program has stepped up to help local small businesses in Northern Virginia. Alexandria Back to Business dished out $3.5 million to more than 300 businesses in the region. The program, supported by the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership and the City of Alexandria, granted awards between $10,000 and $20,000, with roughly 37% of grants going to Black, Asian American or Hispanic-owned businesses.

The Jobs

D.C.

  • Help safeguard the First Amendment: The news org Axios is hiring a Director of Information Security.
  • Stack that app up: Ordway is seeking a Full-Stack Developer.
  • OhMy! Events is looking for a Junior Project Manager. Here’s hoping you don’t have to pronounce the exclamation point every time you tell someone where you’re working.
  • Point3 Federal, taking an interesting approach to capitalization, is hiring a Software Engineer. You’ll be working on the ESCALATE platform; the listing also touts the “FuN Stuff.”

Maryland

  • SmartLogic in Baltimore is seeking a Business Development Manager. The company is looking for someone with a successful track record in B2B sales.
  • The cloud-governance firm cloudtamer.io is hiring a QA Engineer. If you’re looking for a collegial workplace with a startup feel, this is the place for you.
  • The “cyber resilience” company Redjack, in Silver Spring, is looking for a Software Developer.
  • For you star gazers: The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore is hiring a Software Engineer.

Virginia

  • LMI in Tysons is seeking a Data Scientist.
  • Gartner, the company behind Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp, is looking for a Business Analyst in Arlington.
  • Higher Logic — a phrase that also explains 3 a.m. pizza deliveries — is hiring a Software Engineer in Arlington.

Remote

The End

While residents and lawmakers are urging the region’s helicopter pilots to keep it down, other groups are keeping up the fight to Don’t Mute D.C.

ARTLAB on Wednesday is hosting Go-Go Unplugged, an evening of acoustic performances celebrating the women in D.C.’s homegrown music genre, hosted by musician Amber Mim. We can’t think of a better way to unwind — or let loose — after a day of job applications (or shaking your fist at the latest helicopter flyover).

Good luck out there on the job hunt!
