Bricata lands contract to secure large health insurance network

The Columbia cybersecurity startup said it won a deal with Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation.

Cybersecurity startup Bricata said it scored a “sizable win” after inking a contract with a health insurance agency.
With the deal, the Columbia-based startup’s network security platform will be used by Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation. The nonprofit bills itself as the country’s largest customer-owned health insurance agency. HCSC has 22,000 employees, and said it serves 15 million members in five states where it operates subsidiaries under the Blue Cross Blue Shield banner. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Since they keep medical records with sensitive personal information, healthcare companies have become a target of cyber attacks. Along with healthcare, Bricata counts clients in government, finance and large law firms.
Built using open source technology, Bricata’s platform is designed to protect a network by enabling a company to see what’s happening on a network, detecting threats and searching for problems that might fall outside the purview of automated systems. The company recently rolled out an updated version of its product that extends into cloud environments.
It’s a startup we’ve followed since it moved to Maryland from Northern Virginia in 2015. Based at the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship, the company raised $8 million in Series A funding in 2017.
“We secured venture funding last year which enabled us to double down on growth, generate awareness and reach customers like HCSC with a compelling security value proposition,” Bricata CEO John Trauth said in a statement.
Recently, Bricata made our list of up-and-coming startups in Columbia.
