Where cybersecurity fit into Gov. Hogan’s trade mission to Australia

On his latest international trip, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is spending this week in Australia.

Economic development is in the mix for the trip, with stops in Melbourne and Adelaide along the way: “This mission is all about forging new international partnerships and opportunities to create jobs and strengthen our economy,” Hogan said in a statement before the trip began.

Specifically, cybersecurity has been a prominent topic in the Adelaide portion of the visit. It’s an industry that’s growing in Maryland, as the longtime home of key federal agencies gains private sector strength in the area, as well.

On Twitter, the governor posted pictures of a few stops on Thursday related to cybersecurity. The visits included a discussion with South Australian Prime Minster Steven Marshall, and later, he addressed the Defense Industry Cybersecurity Summit.

At the summit, Hogan and Marshall signed a memorandum of understanding between Maryland and South Australia. The goal is “to encourage close collaboration between Maryland and South Australia, particularly in the cybersecurity and satellite technologies sectors.”

Similar agreements have been signed in the UK, the Netherlands, South Korea and more.

This was followed by a visit to Lockheed Martin to see how the Maryland-based company works in another country, as well as a series of meetings with Australian business leaders.

In the Sydney portion of the trip, Hogan also discussed infrastructure as part of an initiative he’s helming as the president of the National Governors Association.
