STEM education efforts in Baltimore frequently get attention from the White House and big corporations. Now, a big conference is set to bring national leaders here in May.
The U.S. News and World Report’s STEM Solutions National Leadership Conference is set to be in Baltimore on the weekend of May 18 at the Hilton. The summit is set to focus specifically on increasing women and minority presence in the STEM fields.
A press release frames Baltimore as a region that best illustrates the “STEM challenge” the country faces, referring to the fact that there are more tech jobs than big employers can fill due to gaps in education.
“With a concentration of health care systems, high-tech companies, research universities, government agencies and defense contractors in its backyard, the Baltimore area has a great need for a STEM-proficient workforce,” Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer of U.S. News, said in a statement.

Among keynote speakers like National Urban League President Marc Morial and high-ranking officials with Boeing and DuPont are Johns Hopkins President Ronald Daniels and UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski.
The conference will also be a chance for Baltimore to highlight the STEM efforts happening here. The current list of speakers includes tech leaders like Tenable CEO Ron Gula, CyberPoint CEO Karl Gumtow, Vasoptic Medical CEO Jason Brooke and Bithenergy CEO Robert Wallace. The Foundery’s Jason Hardebeck, Code in the School’s Gretchen LeGrand and FutureMakers’ Matt Barinholtz are also set to speak, along with OneBaltimore chair Michael Cryor and university officials from Coppin State, Morgan State and Anne Arundel Community College.
