The Makeshift Society is coming to Brooklyn.

The 300+ member coworking space from San Francisco has secured a site in Williamsburg. They are already working now to set it up and get it ready for opening in early 2014 — as cofounder Reena Tom puts it in the video below, “Before the snow melts.”

They have launched a Kickstarter campaign for $30,000 to build a lending and rental library of maker tools in the space. The campaign has secured $3,485 in pledges with 43 days to go.

Makeshift markets itself heavily to freelancers, and not just the folks that code, but also folks who make physical stuff, like the kind of items you might find on Etsy. Williamsburg has loads of freelancers, and Makeshift Brooklyn’s crowdfunding efforts will make working easier for them, even if they don’t actually end up working in Makeshift. That’s because the crowdfunding will support the creation of a lending and rental library for equipment that creative people need occasionally, but can’t afford, such as lighting, cameras, sewing machines and other accouterments of the maker life.

If you have been looking for a good coworking space near your Williamsburg home, it looks like they have found a very nice spot for those who like a lot of light to see by.

Makeshift Society Brooklyn raw spaceIf you’ve needed some advice on some aspect of your work life, there are various reward levels in the campaign that might get you some of that advice at affordable rates.

  • $150 Pledge. Creative advisers to the space will give a one-hour Google Hangout session to eight people.
  • $150 Pledge. Business advisers to the space will give one-hour Google Hangout session to eight people.
  • $250 Pledge. Any one of the co-founders will give a one-hour Google Hangout session to five people.
  • $500 Pledge. A workspace consultation with the space’s architect, for two people.
