Crystal City is peanuts.
The 15th Street-based incubator 1776 announced Tuesday that it is opening a new campus in Dubai. The news was first published in the Washington Business Journal — the campus will be 1776’s first international expansion.
The outpost will be based in Dubai’s Museum of the Future, a newly unveiled project that, according to its website, aims to be “a unique incubator for futuristic innovations and designs.”
1776 cofounder and co-CEO Evan Burfield told WBJ that 1776 Dubai will host events and incubate startups, much like they do in D.C., and will also “advise UAE officials how to develop a regulatory framework to support the growth of new companies.”
“There are so many exciting things happening in the UAE and Dubai,” Burfield said. “Dubai is increasingly becoming a place where entrepreneurs — as soon as they get some money and get going — want to be. It’s a gateway to global markets.”
The expansion news comes less than a month after 1776 announced they’d raised $7.2 million in “strategic investment.” The new 1776 Dubai, once established, will join a growing roster of locations including the headquarters on 15th street, 1776 Crystal City and 1776 San Francisco.
