Three Delaware entities have joined up to unveil what hopes to be the next big startup incubator in the state. The University of Delaware, DuPont and the State of Delaware have partnered and revealed Delaware Innovation Space Inc. (DISI).
The 100,000-square-foot incubation space is one of the buildings located at DuPont’s Experimental Station in Wilmington, near Alapocas Run State Park. DISI will offer space to science, tech, engineering and mathematics-focused startups. DuPont donated the facility as their part of the partnership, along with $2 million in lab equipment and $1.25 million in startup funding.
UD will offer $1.5 million in startup funding over three years, and the state will offer $5 million in funding over that same period. According to UDaily, UD’s Horn Program in Entrepreneurship “will have direct ties to the space,” too.
How’s that for a public-private partnership?
DISI could support up to 2,165 jobs when occupied by tenants. The space, it’s estimated, will offer $20 million in state and local tax revenue and $43 million in federal tax each year. Those numbers are based on max occupancy.
UD’s STAR Campus, another STEM incubator here in Delaware, offers 10,000 square feet of space. DISI is ten times that size, and the nonprofit partnership hopes to fill it with top-tier talent quickly.
