DMV coworking guide: Places to work, with company

Despite the rise in remote work since the pandemic, as well as the DC metro area’s resistance to returning to the office, physical space still matters for innovative entrepreneurs. That’s where this coworking guide comes in.

There are the classic facilities with multiple desks and unlimited coffee. But the region presents more nontraditional and niche spaces, too, including women-focused options and offices specifically designed for creative professionals. Also, places exist where fitness and coworking come together, offering yoga and rock climbing.

Mindspace

It’s hard to get more central than this 31,000-sq.-ft. space at One Franklin Square, located on the floor just below The Washington Post. You’re just as likely to run into a startup founder as a political consultant, each honing their respective pitches in the colorful European-style interior filled with multiple arrangements of desks, couches, meeting rooms and phone booths — not to mention a spacious kitchen area featuring several coffee machines, free cereal and soda, and staff regularly tidying up.

Hera Hub

Looking for a women-focused coworking space? Hera Hub is the place for you. In addition to an area with complimentary snacks and coffee, there are several in-person and virtual events for members including educational workshops and networking opportunities.

Cost: A monthly membership starts at $169.

ALKŌVA

1510 Wisconsin Ave. NW

ALKŌVA, a combined yoga studio and coworking space, aims to incorporate wellness into the workday. The space offers coffee, tea and snacks, shower access, and yoga and pilates classes.

Cost: A daily drop-in fee is $30, and a monthly membership fee is $325. There are also reserved desk and private office options.

This coworking company has offices in downtown DC and Chevy Chase, offering several conference rooms that can accommodate four to 48 people. There’s also an on-site gym membership option.

The HIVE

The HIVE’s biggest draw is its 24/7 access for all of its members. There are 13 desks for flexible use, 32 assigned desks and eight office spaces. The HIVE also hosts different workshops and networking events.

From downtown DC to Arlington to Silver Spring, the region offers several options to get a break from the home office. A monthly membership fee starts at $110.

Bouldering Project

Another unconventional coworking space is the Bouldering Project, whose gym offers different fitness classes and a coworking space. There are climbing, yoga and other fitness classes, alongside social events and workshops.

Membership at the DC location gets you into the other locations across the country. It also includes unlimited classes, guest passes and a discount on clothing and gear sold at the gym.

Cost: A day pass is $35. A monthly recurring membership fee costs $119, plus an additional $80 fee. An annual membership costs $1,320.

The S Street location in Shaw, formerly the Wonder Bread Factory, has outdoor amenities including a furnished patio and rooftop deck. Both locales feature kitchens with cold brew on tap, mothers’ rooms and phone booths for private meetings.

Open Gov Hub

At the Open Gov Hub in downtown DC, there’s 24/7 access for members, 16 meeting rooms, a gym with shower access, and coffee and snacks. There’s also an on-site garage for those driving to the office and an outdoor courtyard to enjoy the sunshine while you work.

Cost: A day pass is $35. There are also dedicated desk and hot desk membership options.

The Pitch

Located at The Wharf, this space offers different coworking memberships, a day pass option and a private office rental. The dedicated desk coworking option and the private office membership allow for 24/7 access to the building.

The infamous coworking chain has eight locations in the region, from a downtown K Street facility to a few in Arlington. Each locale varies in terms of what it offers: Some sites feature mothers’ rooms, wellness rooms and parking. A few are even dog-friendly.

Cost: Prices start at $8 an hour and $29 a day. A monthly plan to access all WeWork spaces is $199 a month.

Two Birds

Two Birds is a holistic space providing early childhood education and care for working parents, including an onsite coworking area. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided, served family style at no extra charge. The coworking space includes private offices and phone rooms, as well as rooms for parents to nurse and pump.

Families can apply online, which will be followed by a tour, and then possible enrollment. There are also opportunities for financial aid and tuition assistance.

Premier

Premier offers one of the most affordable options for coworking in the area. The space has 80 private offices, meeting rooms and a gym.

Convene

Located within a block of the White House, Convene Hamilton Square is the coworking company’s lone DMV coworking facility among its portfolio across some of the US and United Kingdom’s biggest cities (it also has a meeting and events space in Alexandria, Virginia) . Located within the historic Garfinkel’s flagship department store building, Convene’s space offers two floors or 53,000 square feet of open-concept coworking space, conference rooms, event space, food and beverage amenities, and private booths. It’s also central to DC’s tech scene, having hosted the closing events of DC Startup Week back in 2022.

Cost: A community membership starts at $349 a month.

Creative Colony

Located a short walk from the Silver Spring Metro station, Creative Colony is aimed at creative professionals. Members get 24/7 access to the space. There’s also a photo studio onsite available for rental.

Cost: Day passes are $25, and monthly plans start at $100. The photo studio rental is $75 an hour.
