This is how you join the #dctech scene

From its Silver Spring outpost, “new kid on the block” Localist is ready to make its mark on the DMV community. Here's founder Mykel Nahorniak's game plan for leaving Baltimore behind.

Earlier this year, we learned that Localist was relocating from Baltimore to the D.C. area. We recently made the trek to visit the company’s new Silver Spring headquarters, established last month.
The 3,500-square-foot space is barely broken in yet: decoration is sparse and the smell of new furniture lingers on.
But the “new kid on the block,” as founder Mykel Nahorniak put it, has already eased into #dctech circles.
Nahorniak has reached out to Contactually, Social Tables and LivingSocial to “talk shop,” has chatted with DC Tech Meetup founders Zvi Band and DJ Saul, and joined angel investors club K Street Capital.
Nahorniak has a collaborative view of entrepreneurship. “We’re all people, we all want to connect,” he said.
In Baltimore, he was heavily involved in organizing the tech scene — maybe too much for his own good.
“There are probably ten really good developers in the city as a whole,” he said. “They work for my friends’ companies.”
So he decided to get closer to a larger pond of talent. “D.C. couldn’t help but be a [tech] destination based on some of the industries that are here,” he said.
Which also brings him closer to his clients: marketing professionals.
The company currently has 10 full-time employees, about half of whom are D.C.-based.
