It’s a simple concept, but it always bears repeating: Employees are people, and they need to be healthy first and foremost.
Organizations that recognize this actively look out for their workers’ health, and take a holistic approach to maintaining wellness beyond offering health insurance and encouraging regular doctor visits. Increasingly, benefits packages include a variety of wellness resources for physical and mental health. This support can be a determining factor in candidates deciding where to work.

Beyond offering health insurance, what health and wellness resources does your org provide to employees?

The Arlington, Virginia-based news and media org provided this list of additional health and wellness benefits aside from healthcare:
- One mental health day per month
- $100 monthly work-from-home stipend that can go toward anything to make your WFH situation more manageable

- OneMedical membership, including telehealth services
- Increased work flexibility for parents and caretakers
- Access to the Axios Family Fund, which was created to allow employees to request financial support when facing financial hardship or emergencies

“In addition to offering our team members health insurance, Inspire introduced Wellness Days in early 2021 to ensure our team took care of themselves and prioritized their wellbeing during the pandemic,” said a rep for the company, which has bicoastal offices in Philadelphia and Santa Monica. “We offer roughly two Wellness Days per month, often falling on a Friday or Monday, so employees get a long weekend. The goal is for every employee to disconnect and do whatever helps them feel their best. Whether it be sleeping in, exercising, spending time in nature or with family, even clearing out their inboxes and getting on top of their to-do lists. Whatever helps them feel refreshed!”
The clean energy tech company also offers unlimited access to wellness-focused mobile apps focusing on meditation, therapy, exercise and physical therapy.
“We are grateful to be able to provide our employees with a range of resources to meet them on their individual health journey,” said a rep for the Old City, Philadelphia-headquartered company, one of the world’s first and largest open source-focused cloud hosting providers.
“Health is a product of a number of factors from physical to mental wellbeing. That said, our range of offerings includes: free online therapy through AbleTo, reimbursements for gym memberships, fitness classes, massages and quit-smoking aids, continual access to learning on various emotional wellbeing and professional topics, and flexible scheduling for built in work/life balance. Additionally, access to quality health care is one thing, but can be cost prohibitive — we cover up to 90% of health care premiums and 100% of any additional costs incurred.”
“All employees located at our Philadelphia office have access to a gym here in our building,” with the monthly fee covered by Tempest, said a rep for the destination org agency. “As of Nov. 1 everyone with an active healthcare plan through our PEO, Justworks, can enroll for a full year of access to online therapy with Talkspace. This includes one free live video session each month with a licensed therapist and unlimited messages between visits.
“We also have access to confidential counseling services which include unlimited phone sessions and up to three in-person meetings with a local councillor at no charge to the employee.”
