A new makerspace on Greenmount Avenue hosted dignitaries this week. On the weekend, it will host the public.
The two events coincide with the beginning of construction on Open Works, the $11 million project that’s being helmed by the Baltimore Arts Realty Corp. and Will Holman. Located across from Greenmount Cemetery at the corner of the Station North Arts and Entertainment District, the space is expected to open in the fall of 2016.
On Wednesday, city and state leaders like Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford, MICA President Samuel Hoi and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) gathered inside the 34,000-square-foot building to talk about the new space. They were joined by reps from the organization’s funders like the Abell Foundation and Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, as well as city leaders from across tech, creative and nonprofits. Cummings said it must become a “house of dreams” for people in the community.
“We can no longer have a city where there are some people on the outside clamoring to get in,” Cummings said.
The space will feature seven workshops that provide access to computers, 3D printers and tools for woodworking and metalworking, with access costing $125 per month.
There will also be another 150 studios at 50 square feet each that cost $100 a month. Classes and community programs are also being planned, but exact details have yet to be announced.
To learn more, the space will play host to MakeScape on Sept. 26. The listing on the Baltimore Innovation Week calendar promises a preview of the space’s offerings, including “tours, drones, electric vehicles, robots, 3D printers, along with furniture, jewelry and art vendors, kinetic sculptures, kid’s activities, maker workshops, job-training programs, and Baltimore’s tastiest eats.”
The event runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Open Works, which is at 1400 Greenmount Ave.
