Startup Baltimore + Technically Philly = Technically Baltimore

In late 2010 I began a journey to discover all that Baltimore has to offer for a startup entrepreneur. I began organizing the monthly Startup Breakfast as a way for me to meet other likeminded entrepreneurs and would invite VC’s, lawyers, and other growth resources in the region to come talk with us. Realizing that our conversations were quite valuable, I launched this online publication as way to document those conversations and shine a light on other events in the early-stage tech and innovation community. While writing about events and news in the community, I became interested in and writing about other local issues that affected the health of our ecosystem, like Baltimore’s open-government and digital divide issues which I playfully began calling “Baltimore 2.0”.
I’ve been very lucky to meet such an amazing community and contribute to it through events like the Startup Breakfast, Find-a-Cofounder, Startup Weekend, and Education Hack Day. All these events have been organized as a way to stir up activity in the ecosystem and hopefully catalyze new partnerships and ideas.
It wasn’t long until I came across and began following an online publication out of Philadelphia called Technically Philly. They were writing about similar issues and events up in Philly and were also hosting their own events like Switch Philly and Philly Tech Week that centered on the issues and community they were writing about. Over the past few years I’ve observed the impact Technically Philly has had on their ecosystem and have been amazed. Public figures like Mayor Nutter are using it for commentary and announcements and local entrepreneurs are using the publication to boost their awareness.
Recently, I was approached by my colleagues at Technically Media (who produce Technically Philly) and they shared with me their interest in launching a second publication in Baltimore. It didn’t take long for us to see a partnership. Today, I couldn’t be happier to announce that Technically Baltimore will launch as a continuation of this publication, of which I’ll stay affiliated through an advisor role.
The new Technically Baltimore publication has a business model and employment opportunities that will allow it to be sustainable and consistent; two things a passion blog cannot offer. The new publication will soft launch this summer with plans for a more formal launch in the fall. In fact, they’re hiring their first rockstar reporter!
I want to take a moment and thank every one of you that has supported Startup Baltimore, especially those that have contributed to content on the website, attended an event, or shared our articles within your own networks. This new transition will allow for a much brighter light to be shined on our thriving innovation community and I can’t wait!
