The First Minister of Scotland, Rt Hon Alex Salmond MSP, came out to the Urban Future Lab to open the Brooklyn office of Smarter Grid Solutions. The event was marked by signing of agreements for future business collaborations with Silver Spring Networks and HEVO Power (which we’ve covered).

Smarter Grid Solutions is a Scottish company that helps lots of European electric utilities better manage their power, create more resilience and open more capacity in the grid, using software. They call it, Active Network Management. The originator of the technology, Dr. Bob Currie, is the company’s Chief Technology Officer. He’s leading the U.S. efforts from Brooklyn.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is funding a project with the company, ConEdison and NYU-CUSP. Gov. Cuomo’s announcement of the award described the project this way:

Con Edison, working with NYU-Poly, Smarter Grid Solutions Inc. and NYU-Center for Urban Science and Progress, will investigate a number of techniques and technologies to develop microgrid applications in the New York metro area that can operate in parallel with the electric grid or independent of the grid, such as a power outage. Such technology solutions could derive energy, environmental and economic benefits, as well as increased resiliency during a variety of potential contingencies and emergencies. Funding: $663,000

Both HEVO Power and Smarter Grid Solutions are part of the Urban Future Lab. More photos from the event on Smarter Grid Solutions’ Flickr page.
