What’s a minority entrepreneur up against?

Here’s one answer from Anita Garimella Andrews, who sold her online marketing optimization company Sepiida to Manayunk’s Delphic Sage last month, taken from a recent Q&A with the Philadelphia Daily News.

From the interview:

Q: The Kauffman Foundation says 3 percent of tech startups are run by women. Why so few?

A: You need to play the game. I didn’t go out for beers after work. You need to build ladders to higher roles and they are less traditional than in a Fortune 500 company. As a woman and a person of color, I think it’s still the case you just have to do better. There’s less serendipity in our career paths.

Read the whole Q&A here, in which Garimella Andrews speaks about the struggle of selling a company that was “her baby.”

Garimella Andrews is now part of Delphic Sage’s senior management team, the Daily News reported. She is an active member of the local women in tech scene, participating in organizations like TechGirlz. Find more of our coverage on Garimella Andrews here and here.
