As of May’s end, BeerGivr, the local startup that allows you to buy your friends drinks long before you’ve hit that Friday evening Happy Hour, was available in twenty bars in or around Baltimore City. It had taken first place in the Bootstrapper category of the inaugural Maryland Pinterest Business Pitch Contest.
And the minds behind the sudsy sensation, Sean Kennedy and Ryan Bricklemyer, had just released Twitter integration to redeem beer gifts, something that has garnered more than 100,000 web impressions.
But during a recent conversation with Kennedy over beers at Mother’s (I assure you I didn’t order anything “lite”), he told me the pair weren’t sure where they were going with BeerGivr.
“As a startup, you constantly have to reevaluate where you are and where you’re going,” said Kennedy, who has been full-time at BeerGivr for about one month now.
Worry not, beer-swilling comrades. While Kennedy and Bricklemyer are presently exploring different opportunities on the business side of beer—developments Kennedy couldn’t exactly share with me just yet—BeerGivr, as it exists now, isn’t changing. You may still text friends QR codes that, upon being scanned by smartphone-wielding tenders of bars, unlock predetermined dollar amounts.
“There’s a lot of continued buzz,” Kennedy said. (I’m fairly certain it was a no-pun-intended moment.) “We’re trying to figure out the right model to capitalize fully on that interest.”
One way the duo has managed that: Free Drink Fridays. This involves nothing more than tweeting out some BeerGivr gifts that don’t become active until a certain retweet threshold has been reached. On occasion, Kennedy said, they’ve seen 60,000 impressions on just a single gift.
Not bad for a few retweets.
