What’s in your faucet? Tern Water rolls out tap-water testing kits

In a bid to raise awareness about water quality, realLIST runner-up Tern Water just rolled out a new service.

For $15, the makers of a smart water faucet — based out of Benjamin’s Desk 601 Walnut location — will test the quality of your water and give you a report on contaminants (like lead and fluoride) and qualities like pH and dissolved solids.

It works like this: Tern Water will mail you a kit with a shipping label and a thingy called a Tern Capsule. It looks like this:

You fill it up with water from your faucet and mail it back to the company, which tests it and sends you the results, along with a rating system to identify potential irregularities.

“We want to simplify the process for the way people can get information about their water,” said founder Mohammed Zerban. He also cedes the process is a way for users to learn more about water quality, users that may later be interested in the smart faucet that the company is working on.

“It’s user awareness, but in an actionable way,” Zerban said.
