The Society for Science awarded $10K in STEM microgrants to these 3 Baltimore orgs

The Society for Science has awarded grants totaling $10K to a trio of Baltimore organizations working with youth: The Baltimore Underground Science Space (BUGSS), Black Girls Dive Foundation and Safe Alternative Foundation for Education, Inc. (SAFE).

It’s part of $165,000 in microgrants awarded this year to 38 organizations through the D.C.-based Society for Science’s STEM Action Grant program.

BUGSS, a community science lab based in Highlandtown, received a $5,000 grant to offer materials, research experiences and workshops to Latinx students and their families. This is designed to expand STEM opporutnities and pathways to higher education. BUGSS is partnering with the Latino Education Advancement Fund. Some of those workshops and research experience will likely involve pharmaceutical engineering and insulin manufacturing.

The Black Girls Dive Foundation and SAFE both received $2,500 in funding.

This is the fourth time Black Girls Dive has been awarded the grant, and it will go towards the Owings Mills-based org’s unique brand of marine biology programming, which often results in participants getting their scuba license.

SAFE has also received the grant for the fourth time, and will use the funds for its after-school programming and summer camps that combine land, air and sea in its STEM curriculum. Founded by Van Brooks, the foundation runs a center in the Franklin Square neighborhood.
