One of our recently named RealLIST Startups 2020 honorees started the year off with a win in Dubai.

Earlier this week, medical device company Sonavi Labs won the pitch competition at Arab Health 2020, which is one of the largest healthcare expos, and draws attendees and exhibitors from around the world.

At the four-day event’s Innov8 Talks Pitch Competition, CEO Ellington West pitched Feelix, the company’s platform that combines a digital stethoscope and software to diagnose respiratory conditions. With the ability to be used without internet access, the company has a mission to increase access to healthcare around the world.

The competition featured 32 startups pitching, and the judges were from Philips, the American Hospital Dubai and the Dubai Science Park.

With the win, the company gets a booth at next year’s conference. It also put the local tech community on a global stage. Based out of Harbor Designs and Manufacturing in Pigtown’s 1100 Wicomico, Sonavi represents a group of health-focused Baltimore companies aiming for impact in global markets beyond the city, and country.

Those companies have found support from the state. Sonavi’s team was one of 11 Maryland companies that attended Arab Health 2020 as part of a delegation led by Lieutenant Gov. Boyd Rutherford and the Maryland Department of Commerce. The state has also taken the delegation approach with big industry events like RSA.

The win “showcases not only the benefit of events like Arab Health in exposing Maryland startups to a global audience, it also highlights the strength and innovation of our state’s healthcare industry,” Rutherford said in a statement.
