The Baltimore Orioles, back in the playoffs for the first time since 2012, are fresh off their first AL East championship since 1997. You probably know that. But when was the last time they led the division at the All-Star break? Whose home run in the 1966 World Series helped the Orioles top the Los Angeles Dodgers?*
NewsUp knows. The online quiz startup posts fun tests on topics in the news, as well as on pop culture, history and sports. They even made a quiz for this year’s Baltimore Innovation Week.
The startup hosted a Thursday night celebration at the Towson studios of WTMD, featuring local music, brews and food. Roughly 100 turned out to the launch party, founder and CEO Andrew Schuster said.
“It’s still a public beta, but this is really the newest version of that,” Schuster said.
NewsUp launched its beta in August.
“There’s still a long way to go on this journey but it’s nice to reflect a bit and celebrate the things we’ve done up to this point,” Schuster said. “We’re still adding new features. We’re integrating things like tags and searches into the system.”

NewsUp currently has five full-time employees, with plans to grow to eight by the year’s end, he said.
Schuster said NewsUp will monetize itself through content partnerships as well as its own technology, which he said could have applications beyond the media business.
“I think we have some really compelling technology that would be valuable to a lot of publishers,” he said. “What’s next for NewsUp is making more great content and working with other brands to grow the work we’re doing here.”

*(The Orioles last led the division at the break in 1997, by the way. And the homer was off the bat of 1966 World Series MVP Frank Robinson.)
