Goucher, Loyola get Comcast streaming service

Comcast is expanding a service at colleges that allows students to stream TV across their devices. That means students at two Baltimore colleges will now have access to Xfinity On Campus.
Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore and Goucher College in Towson are the two local colleges that will have access to the service. It’s part of a move by Comcast to increase the number of schools with the service from seven to 27.
The streaming service allows students to watch about 80 channels on laptops, smartphones, tablets and other devices. Colleges offer the service to students who live in on-campus housing, and it’s woven into room-and-board costs.

As devices proliferate, the company has begun to move into streaming for the rest of the world, and colleges have been a test market. In announcing a beta test of a service called XFinity Stream in July, the company said its On Campus program was a precursor.
Comcast is also closely monitoring viewing habits. Along with adding the new universities, Comcast also released data on what college students watched.
The company’s data revealed that students still prefer live TV over on-demand shows by a margin of 62-38 percent.
Part of that may be attributed to which live programming they’re tuning in to watch. As is the case with cable, live sports were by far the most-viewed events.
Only Keeping Up with the Kardashians was able to crack a top 10, made up mostly of basketball, hockey and international soccer. Sitcoms and dramas like Big Bang Theory and Law and Order SVU made up only eight of the top 20 most-watched shows.
