Tempering the promise that Internet of Things is truly going to connect our appliances and cars to the internet, there’s been a consistent chorus of warnings that security will be a major issue.
A dramatic example came when hackers remotely destroyed a Jeep last year, but the data that could be vulnerable creates a more lucrative, if less fiery, form of risk.
Now one of the city’s bigger security companies believes IoT security is a big enough issue to create a standalone company around it.
CyberPoint International announced on Thursday that it is spinning out AKUA. Led by Neil Furukawa, the company will focus on selling what was once CyberPoint’s IoT platform.
While cars and home appliances are useful ways for writers to introduce the IoT threat, AKUA will initially focus on B2B sales for supply chain logistics. It’s based on the increasing belief that sensors can create more data for businesses as they look to decrease variables when managing large volumes of goods or products.
It’s another spinout for CyberPoint. Last year, the company created PivotPoint Risk Analytics to help businesses analyze security risks.
