Between those who have left and those who have stayed, the population of Baltimore city had a net gain in the last year, according to numbers released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
As of July 1, 2012, the Census Bureau estimated that 621,342 lived in the city, an increase from the previous year’s estimate of 620,216. It’s a trend happening in cities across the country.
But the significance of the data, according to the Baltimore Sun, is that this is the first time in years Census estimates have showed an increase in population since Baltimore’s peak of 950,000 recorded in 1950.
From the Sun:

Immigration to Baltimore increased at the same time as the number of people leaving the city went down, the estimate shows. … Between July 2011 and July 2012 about 3,000 people left the city and about 2,000 moved to Baltimore from abroad, according to the estimates.
