The Alamo Cup went to the team from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County last week.
In San Antonio, UMBC emerged victorious in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, besting college teams from nine other regions.
Members of the feared Cyber Dawgs included Anh Ho, Seamus Burke, Chris Gardner, Christian Beam, Justin Wright, Zack Orndorff, Jacob Rust and Bryan Vanek. The faculty advisor is Charles Nicholas.
In the competition, teams compete for points in an effort to secure a network that’s similar to what student data defenders would find in the real world. The task this year was to secure the network of a retail corporation, which included point-of-sale and inventory systems.

“We are as excited about the national cyber defense competition as we are about an NCAA athletic competition,” UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski said in a statement.
Along with the Cup, the team from UMBC will get a tour of D.C. research and security sites this summer.
Getting to nationals required a win in the regional competition, where teams from Towson University, the University of Maryland, College Park and Drexel University.
