It’s a Philadelphia Maker Celebration, and the Free Library wants to see what you’re creating.
Apply to show off your work at the event on Aug. 17 at the Central Library at 19th and Vine Streets. The Library will choose 50 makers and give each of them $50. The term “maker” is open-ended here: it can be art, electronic textiles, metalwork, you name it.
The showcase is a capstone to the Free Library’s Maker Corps program, a summer-long youth workshop series at five locations around the city where youth can learn to solder LEDs, build paper circuits and make their own balloon zipline, among other things.
The program is funded in large part by a grant from the Maker Ed Initiative. So far, more than 100 youth and families have participated in the program since it started in June, said Free Library digital resource specialist K-Fai Steele.
