As of this afternoon, cloud computing company Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is headquartered in Virginia, is reporting an outage for multiple services in the US-EAST-1 Region.
At 3:08 EST, AWS said that it was experiencing error rates and latencies that it was investigating. Approximately 20 minutes later, it reported that it had determined a root cause for the AWS Lamda outage. US-East-1 is the code name for Northern Virginia and includes six availability zones and 10 local zones of coverage.
“We are continuing to work to resolve the error rates invoking Lambda functions,” the latest update said. “We’re also observing elevated errors obtaining temporary credentials from the AWS Security Token Service, and are working in parallel to resolve these errors.”
Several large entities are reporting outages as a result of the AWS issues. Metropolitan Transit Authority, New York City’s public transit agency, reported that its service status information was unavailable due to the outage. Meanwhile, sneaker and apparel marketplace StockX also said users were having trouble accessing the platform.
“You may be having a hard time accessing StockX right now due to an Amazon Web Services outage affecting several platforms,” a tweet from the company reads. “We’re working closely with their team to get things back up and running and will update you here once the issue is resolved.”
Several other companies and agencies of varying sizes reported that they and their users or customers were impacted by the outage, as well:
AWS’ East Coast headquarters is located in Herndon, Virginia. According to the company’s latest Economic Impact Statement, the company invested $51.9 billion in Virginia from 2011 to 2021.
Those interested in tracking the outage’s progress may do so via the AWS Health Dashboard.
The outage takes place as Amazon Web Services holds its cloud-focused AWS re:Inforce conference in Anaheim, California.
