Events Roundup: This June, Philly tech heads into the ‘new normal’ with some hybrid and in-person meetups

We learn how to navigate IRL events again this month with job fairs, a deep dive into the region's medtech scene, and a how-to on getting hired into a data engineering and data science career.

Events Roundup is a Technical.ly column where we highlight events happening in the Philly area each month. Got a submission? Email us the details so we can consider it for our next roundup.

Happy June! Welcome to the first Events Roundup in 15 (!!!) months where a collection of in-person, virtual or hybrid events are back on our calendars.

As vaccination rates rise across Philadelphia (and the country), most organizations, companies and meetup groups will begin making the decision: Should this meeting or event stay virtual, or should we gather in person? It’s a theme explored in many of the events, webinars and panels this month. Also on the calendar this month are job fairs, a deep dive into the medtech community in the region, and info on how to get hired into a data engineering and data science career.

We’ve been talking about the “new normal” for a long time, and folks, it appears we may be here. If you have’t gotten a vaccine yet, find a City-run clinic here or a partner clinic here.

Let’s jump in!

Pride Month Calendar

June is Pride Month in Philadelphia, and while the usual celebration has been moved to Labor Day weekend (and been modified, for safety), you can still find a mix of virtual and in-person events this month. Hit up a drag brunch, vaccine clinic, Pride Night at the Flower Show, or stop by City Hall to watch the annual raising of the LGBTQ flag.

What is the “New Normal”?

Join this panel discussion where experts from different industries (retail, restaurants, events, higher education and real estate) will talk about about the challenges they faced during the pandemic and how they managed to pivot. They’ll also share what they believe future will look like. This event is part of Venture Cafe’s Thursday gatherings. You can attend online or in person at Quorum.

What Are Hiring Managers Looking For in Candidates?

The DataPhilly, RLadiesPhilly and DataLab meetup groups are joining together for this virtual event diving into hiring for data science and data engineering roles. The event invites eight actively hiring managers to talk about the disparity between what recruiters say “to what hiring managers really want.” They’ll help candidates prep for careers in data engineering or data science and help employers find better candidates. Hear from folks at Comcast, goPuff, Azavea, Elastic and more.

PHLYouth Summer Career Fest

The Mayor’s Office of Youth Engagement is partnering with the Philadelphia Youth Commission and the Millennial Advisory Committee to host the first PHLYouth Summer Career Fest. This jobs and resource fair is catered specifically toward Gen Z and millennial Philadelphians in an effort to support the city’s youngest residents in finding opportunities for the summer and beyond. Head to Love Park this Saturday to make a connection and meet some local companies that are hiring, plus get a COVID-19 vaccine at the Philly Health Department pop-up clinic.

Campus Philly Interns Lunch and Learn

If you’re interning for a Philly company this summer (even if you’re working from home) Campus Philly has put together a guide to making the most of your time here. The event will go over the Philly basics, like how to get around, where to find the best cheesesteaks and the best deals and discounts for college students. The lunch and learn will also talk about how to find communities to build your network, events you can attend in-person or virtually, and neighborhoods where you’ll “find your fit.”

Investing in Resilience: Levering the Power of the Food Sector

ImpactPHL and Impact for Breakfast are hosting this virtual event for a range of folks interested in learning about “levering the power of the food sector” by making capital investments in area food businesses and growing a path to community health and economic resilience. Mark Watson, senior investment strategist of the Fair Food Network, and James Johnson-Piett, the principal and CEO of Urbane Development, will lead the event. The event is aimed at high-net-worth folks, family offices, endowment/foundation leadership, investment professionals, pension fund trustees, nonprofit leaders and “anyone interested in broadening their investment horizons.”

Setting the Stage: Plans for Safe Convening

Join the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia in this virtual event discussing the safest way to reconvene at in-person events as vaccinations rise and COVID-19 cases drop. A panel of industry leaders from venues and hospitality organizations in the region will discuss the implications and possibilities that come with bringing people together to network and entertain customers, clients and tourists. Attendees will learn best practices that are being developed to safely host large groups of event attendees at locations throughout the city.

MedTech Night at at Venture Cafe

The Thursday night weekly gathering at Quorum has a special focus on the medtech industry in Philadelphia on June 17. Multiple events throughout the afternoon will focus on the future of the industry, how it’s expanding in the region, where funding lies and how to solve prevalent inequities. Check out the slate of events here, and plan to attend virtually or in person; some events are offering hybrid attendance.

PACT’s 2021 Enterprise Awards

The Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies (PACT)’s annual awards are back in a hybrid format, with an in-person event for nominees and VIP guests and a virtual broadcast the following day. The evening will include an IRL recognition of this year’s Legend Award Honoree, venture capitalist and serial entrepreneur Josh Kopelman. The event will be available to view virtually on June 30 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
