What’s happening in the Baltimore tech scene this month? Fill your calendar with these 6 events

It’s finally August. Maybe you’re waiting for that big beach vacation you planned, or just trying to wait out the heat before it cools down in the fall (if it does).

Regardless of your plans, Baltimore’s tech and entrepreneurship worlds are keeping busy with events that promise insight, learning and connection. From a music-tech collaboration to youth tech and entrepreneurship showcases, here are just a handful of the events you might want to add to your calendar this month. 

Equitech Tuesdays (every Tuesday, 6 p.m.)

With the exception of a special edition at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on Aug. 8, the night before “AI in A Minor” (see below), UpSurge Baltimore’s recurring happy hour for the local innovation scene continues strong at Guilford Hall Brewery throughout the month of August. This is the event to attend if you want to connect with peers and friends (and future peers and friends) in Baltimore’s tech and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Location: Guilford Hall Brewery, 1611 Guilford Ave. 

“AI in A Minor” (Wednesday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m.)

Learn about the rise and potential effects of AI on human expression at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Listen to AI-generated compositions performed by Baltimore Symphony Orchestra musicians. The event will begin with the audience experiencing AI through virtual-reality activities in the lobby. It will conclude with a robust discussion about the effects of AI on business and innovation moderated by Tood Marks, CEO of Mindgrub Technologies. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the implications of artificial intelligence explored within the context of our community. Location: Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. Tickets are $25 for adults, $12 for children under the age of 17.

“Surviving the Tech Age” (Thursday, Aug. 10, 4-6 p.m,)

Check out this screening of a film depicting a project put together by Maryland 4-H youth who helped Baltimore County senior citizens and farmers learn new technology. The youth workers partnered with the Baltimore County Department of Aging and the Department of Economic and Workforce Development to make their project work. Location: Senator Theatre, 5904 York Road. Admission is free. 

Seventh Annual Bet on Baltimore Showcase (Thursday, Aug. 10, 6 p.m.)

Come down to Baltimore Center Stage for an evening of presentations from some of Baltimore’s top young innovators. The featured participants come from tech ed organization Dent Education’s signature summer program; their work draws on disciplines as varied as design, music and tech. This event will include members of the Dent community, including alumni and current Dent participants. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn what tomorrow’s innovation leaders have done with their summer. Location: Baltimore Center Stage, 700 N. Calvert St. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

Technical Assistance Seminar for cannabis business applicants (Monday, Aug. 14, 5-7 p.m.)

With the recent statewide legalization of cannabis, the Maryland Cannabis Association is hosting a seminar discussing the Cannabis Reform Act and different options available to would-be entrepreneurs. The event will go over license types, the business license application process and equity incentives. For those interested in the cannabis industry, including its tech-side opportunities, join this seminar. Location: Coppin State University, J. Millard Tawes Center, Ballroom, 2500 W. North Ave. Admission is free.

Summer HITCH Career Fair (Tuesday, Aug. 15, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.)

For those interested in networking and forging new career opportunities, consider attending the HITCH Career Fair in Anne Arundel County. Attendees can learn about opportunities from the Department of Public Safety, Call 4 Health and more and more. Location: AAWDC Career Center, 613 Global Way, Linthicum Heights. Admission is free.
