This free event wants to get students excited about the ‘underrated’ field of communications

iHeartMedia account executive Alonda Tucker will host.

Next week, Wilmington based tech school, ACT Generation, is hosting an event titled Mass Comm 360. Founder Travis Smith‘s goal is to “create an environment where high school and college students can interact with 35 mass communication professionals from diverse backgrounds,” with hopes of making this a semiannual event.

Smith wants to shine a light on a profession that he says is “underrated and underrepresented.” He especially wants to connect the dots between mass communication professionals and high schoolers who might not be looking to go straight to college after graduation. High schoolers aren’t the only target audience though, they’re also targeting college students and adults who might be looking for a career change.
What can attendees expect? They’ve got panel discussions and breakout workshops scheduled with the entire event being hosted by iHeartMedia account executive Alonda Tucker. There will also be a keynote address delivered in the form of of a live interview by Delaware State University student India Williams.
Why the “360”? Because the event hopes to give attendees a 360-degree view of the mass communications spectrum while engaging with professionals who range from social media, government, entertainment and corporate contributors. They hope to create a lifelong learning experience for millennials to baby boomers.
Special guests include:

  • Chuck Creekmur, founder of Allhiphop.com
  • Steven Ford, music and film producer
  • Tonya Richardson, City of Wilmington Public Relations & Communications Officer

Smith also wants to target students who might be struggling in high school to “help them get out of the hurdle by finding their passion and applying it to the communications field.” ACT is even giving out 10 scholarships for their certification classes.
It’s all going down on Friday, March 24, from 4:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. at ACT Global (715 N. Orange St).
